This work contains the textual notes to Yu Yan's Cantong qi commentary. It is an integral part of his Cantong qi fahui but is published separately in the Daozang. In these notes, Yu Yan points out variant readings for about 230 verses or individual terms, about eighty of which he rejects as “wrong” (fei shi 非是). In several cases, moreover, Yu Yan elaborates on the meaning of certain terms, providing additional notes to those found in his commentary.
Almost all variants reported in the Shiyi are introduced by the phrase yiben 一本, “One version reads . . .” and are not ascribed to specific authors or editions. In a few instances, however, Yu Yan refers to particular works, namely the commentaries by Peng Xiao 彭曉, Zhu Xi 朱熹, and Chen Xianwei 陳顯微; the now-lost editions of Peng Xiao’s commentary by Liu Yongnian 劉永年 and Zheng Huan 鄭煥; and the now-lost commentaries by Li Baosu 李抱素, Chen Huizhen 陳會真, and Zhan Gu 詹谷.
