Golden Flower; Flower of Metal.

Definitions

▣ One of the main alchemical emblems of True Yang. Flowing Pearl of Great Yang.

⦿ CTQ 22: That is why lead is black on the outside but cherishes the Golden Flower within, like the man who wears rough-hewn clothes but cherishes a piece of jade in his bosom, and outwardly behaves like a fool. Comm. Peng Xiao: This means that before Lead transmutes itself into the white Metal, it is still confused within its ore. Outside it looks black, but within it cherishes the Golden Flower, similar to a fool who “wears rough-hewn clothes but cherishes a piece of jade in his bosom.”[1] 謂鉛未化白金之前,混于礦內,外貌黑而內藏金華,若被褐懷玉之狂夫也。

⦿ CTQ 62: The Flowing Pearl of Great Yang desires ever to leave you. When, at last, it finds the Golden Flower, it turns about, and the two rely upon each other.

⦿ XZSS 26 WZP: Mercury is the Flowing Pearl. Lead is the Golden Flower.

⦿ FX: The Flowing Pearl is Yin within Yang. The Golden Flower is Yang within Yin.

⦿ XMGZ LJ: When we say Golden Flower and Yellow Sprout (huangya), they both refer to True Lead (zhenqian).

▣ An emblem of light, which in turn is an image of True Yang (zhenyang) or Pure Yang (chunyang).

⦿ JHZZ 1: The Golden Flower is light. What is the appearance of light? It is represented by the Golden Flower, which hides the word “light.”[2]

▣ The Elixir.

⦿ JHZZ 1: The Golden Flower is the Golden Elixir.

Notes

  1. ↑ This expression derives from DDJ 70: “The sage wears rough-hewn clothes but cherishes a piece of jade in his bosom”
  2. ↑ When the characters jinhua 金華 are written vertically, the strokes forming the lower part of jin 金 “gold” and two of the strokes forming the upper part of hua 华 “flower” (a simplified form of hua 華) result in the character guang 光 “light.”
